It has been four months from the date of the great disaster, which broke out in Om Agriculture Farm of Mr Baburam Karki. He still cannot forget that moment, even if he wants too. How can he? The moment, when children like cared cows burned down to ashes!
On 3rd of Asadh Saturday, in Kathmandu-Gokarneshwar municipality, due to the electric short circuit, suddenly fire broke out in the agricultural farm. The loss had crossed limit when the fire couldn’t be controlled for nearly two hours. Among one hundred twenty-two cows, ninety-seven were charred to death by the fire and millions rupees loss was suffered.
Nearly four crores invested cow farm had to suffer three or a quarter more crores of loss, claims Mr Karki. Established in 2069 BS, Om Agricultural Farm was expanding in investment, day by day. In the track of business expansion, the investment had reached forty million rupees, claims Karki. After the shift of business from Bhaktapur to Sundarijal of Gokarneshwar, business had started to gain its speed. He was even thinking to add more cows to make his business mightier. But, to the agony, this disaster made him effortless and helpless without a breath to revive.
“Even after the death of nearly 100 cows, the zeal to be a successful farmer is still remaining in him.”
While climbing the early step of his business path, the fire burned his all investment, but he didn’t lose his courage, however. Was it other than Karki, he wouldn’t have dared to do anything after this mighty disaster. Mr Karki also had the same feeling in the beginning, however. But, whatever be the case, he took the oath to bring continuity in his business, after it.
Government’s assistance, improving business
A day after the incident, the secretary of the Ministry of livestock development, Yuvakdhwaj GC visited the cow farm. After a detailed study of the incident and loss, Secretary GC assured to take the proposal as fast as he could to the cabinet. As per assurance, Government provided four hundred thousand rupees too, as a relief. But that relief couldn’t even be enough to manage the dead livestock. But still, he admits its utility for the controlling and moving ahead of his destroyed business. He has the experience that the monetary relief to the farmers, suffering the same calamities as he had, encourages them to rise up again.
Karki still has 15 million rupees liability for the loan. But still, he is engaged courageously to revive his business. In spite of million rupees of loss, he isn’t hopeless. He spent the relief from the government sector, rupees four hundred thousand for the management of his dead livestock. Similarly, he revived his cow farm by the borrowed money from friends and relatives. Now, he has brought 60 cows from India to give continuity to his business. Nearly, 4-5 hundred thousands of rupees was spent only to bring cows as per his estimation.
Bank stopped the insurance money
Out of 122 cows, from the insurance of 68 cows, Karki’s claim of Rs 6 million was paid by the company. But still, some money was stopped by the bank, he says. He further says “for the consideration of cows insurance, the payment from United Insurance has been stopped by the bank. If the claim was received, the business could have been effectively operated.”
“All the cows were not insured. Only the Lainas species and milking cows (Duhuna) were insured. After the incident, the employees of insurance company inspected the spot of disaster and incident. Thereafter, the payment was to be affected. A claim of 60 million rupees approved by the insurance company was duly paid, but the Janata Bank ( Creditor Bank ) stopped the claim money. I had been paying the loan interest within the due date, but, the bank stopped the money due to the loss of the loan mortgage. If only, I had received that insurance money, It would have been easier for me, to continue my business,” he admits further.
